The Wagner brothers are the stars of this year’s Basketball World Cup.
On Tuesday, Germany defeated Serbia 83-77 in the final of the Basketball World Cup 2023 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. The victory capped an epic run to the title. It is the first title for Germany.
At the last EuroBasket, Germany finished third with younger players, signaling a successful generational transition, with Dennis Schroder (185 cm, G) and Franz Wagner (208 cm, F) at the center of it. The two were the core of Germany’s offense.
Schroeder averaged 19.1 points and 6.1 assists per game at the tournament and was named the Basketball World Cup MVP.
While Schroeder anchored the team with his veteran presence, the younger Wagner brought a lot of energy to the team. He averaged 16.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3 assists, taking a load off Schroeder’s shoulders.
After the win, Wagner said, “It’s unreal that we made it this far. It’s unbelievable that I won a championship in here. I just enjoyed every game and that’s how I got here. It’s a very valuable experience. This is a great opportunity for me to grow.”
For Wagner, this tournament was especially special. He was able to share the title with his brother Moritz Wagner (211 cm, F-C).
Franz Wagner said: “It’s a special experience to be able to play for your country with your brother. My parents came to watch us, and the rest of the family came to watch us. I’m even happier to have won with my brother.”
Moritz Wagner also played his part in the tournament 바카라사이트. With an average of 11.9 points, he was the third highest scorer on the team behind Schroeder and Franz Wagner.
Meanwhile, the two players are not only playing for the German national team, but also for their clubs. Moritz Wagner re-signed with the Orlando Magic this offseason for two years and $16 million. The brothers will continue to play together next season.
